The aim of the test is to briefly assess the dog’s personality and certain cognitive traits. Both purebred and mixed breed dogs can take part in the test (like in all smartDOG tests). PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TEST DOES NOT INCLUDE AN ACCESS TO A smartDOG DATABASE – this means that you are not able to compare your dog’s result against your dog breed’s or all breed’s average. However, you will get a report from your dogs’ behavior in the test.
The personality subtests briefly measure the shyness-boldness axis (exploration in a novel space, reaction to unfamiliar object, platform shyness), friendliness/sociality towards humans, problem solving strategy (independent or asking for help), self-control, playfulness and human gesture reading. All aspects of the test are based on cognitive or behavioural research. Studies have shown that a dog’s attitude towards a stranger or strange object correlates well with the dog’s everyday behaviour. The test is performed indoors. The test is not too demanding, which means that even a timid dog can be safely brought to the test. The dog is not required to be obedient during the test. Dogs from 10 months upwards are welcome, there is no upper age limit.

- Meeting a stranger (sociability-personality category)
- Exploration in a novel space (activity and curiosity – in a new space)

- Gesture reading (hands)
- V-fence (spatial problem solving strategy)
